Background of the Study

Mobile learning, or m-learning, refers to the use of mobile devices to facilitate learning outside traditional classroom settings. This form of learning offers flexibility and accessibility, especially for students with special needs, who may face barriers in conventional educational environments. In Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, the integration of mobile learning could help special needs students overcome challenges related to mobility, communication, and engagement with traditional learning methods.

The effectiveness of mobile learning for special needs students has gained significant attention in recent years, as mobile devices provide personalized learning experiences through specialized applications and resources. These devices can be tailored to meet the unique learning needs of students, offering features like text-to-speech, interactive content, and customized learning paths. Despite these advantages, the adoption of mobile learning for special needs students remains inconsistent, with barriers such as limited access to technology, inadequate teacher training, and resistance to new methods of learning. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of mobile learning in improving educational outcomes for special needs students in Makurdi.

Statement of the Problem

Special needs students in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, face significant challenges in accessing quality education due to the limitations of traditional teaching methods. The effectiveness of mobile learning for these students remains underexplored, hindering the full potential of this educational tool.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current state of mobile learning for special needs students in secondary schools in Makurdi Local Government Area.

  2. To evaluate the impact of mobile learning on the academic performance and engagement of special needs students.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing mobile learning for special needs students.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of mobile learning adoption for special needs students in secondary schools in Makurdi Local Government Area?

  2. How does mobile learning impact the academic performance of special needs students?

  3. What challenges and opportunities exist for the implementation of mobile learning in secondary schools for special needs students?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Special needs students in Makurdi Local Government Area have limited access to mobile learning resources.

  2. The use of mobile learning leads to improved academic performance and engagement among special needs students.

  3. There are significant challenges in implementing mobile learning for special needs students in Makurdi Local Government Area.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will contribute to the understanding of the potential benefits of mobile learning for special needs students. By identifying the key factors that influence its effectiveness, the study will inform strategies for better integration of mobile learning in special needs education, ultimately enhancing student engagement and academic success.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on secondary schools in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, and evaluate the use of mobile learning among special needs students. Limitations include varying levels of access to mobile devices and the need for specialized training for teachers.
